WLDY-WJBL NEWS       5-4-18

An area of high pressure will take hold today, quickly drying the air out and breezes will pick up from the west and northwest. After the chance for some fog early, the sky will turn sunny and afternoon highs will be about ten degrees above average, in the mid 70’s. The weather will be great for spending some time outside!

The weekend will also produce some nice, outdoor weather and this is great news for area activities, including the Eau Claire marathon on Sunday in Carson Park. Saturday will start off with sunshine, but some clouds will begin to develop through the afternoon. A low pressure system and warm front are forecast to slide into the state from the northwest by late in the day. Out ahead of this will be a warm southwest flow that should allow us to climb well into the 70’s. A few scattered showers and storms will then be possible, but most places and much of the time will be dry. Better chances may hold off until the evening and first part of the night. This system will then quickly exit, leading to the return of nice but cooler weather on Sunday. Plenty of sunshine is forecast, along with more seasonable highs, in the 60’s.

More nice weather carries into the start of next week with sunshine and some clouds Monday into Tuesday. Temperatures look to rise back into the lower 70’s both days before the next front brings the return of showers and storms to the area by next Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. employers stepped up hiring modestly in April, and the unemployment rate fell to 3.9 percent, evidence of the economy’s resilience amid the recent stock market chaos and anxieties about a possible trade war.

Job growth amounted to a decent 164,000 last month, up from an upwardly revised 135,000 in March, the Labor Department said Friday. The unemployment rate fell after having held at 4.1 percent for the prior six months largely because fewer people were searching for jobs.

The gains reflect an economy that has been steadily expanding for almost nine years, gradually putting more people to work after the country endured the worst financial meltdown since the Great Depression in the 1930s.

Many employers say it’s become difficult to find qualified workers. Even so, they haven’t significantly bumped up pay in most industries. Average hourly earnings rose 2.6 percent from a year ago.

The overall unemployment rate remained, as in recent months, the lowest since December 2000. The rate for African-Americans — 6.6 percent — is the lowest on record since 1972.

Many economists say the unemployment rate is now so low that wage growth should begin to climb this summer, since employers will face more pressure to boost pay in order to hire workers.
