(Madison, WI)  —  The southern half of Wisconsin still has some great fall colors, especially if you can see them today (Friday) which will be the sunniest day of the weekend. Travel Wisconsin Dot Com says most counties in southern and central areas are at 50-to-100-percent of their peaks for red, yellow, and orange leaves. The far south normally does not peak until the end of October — and colors there are only about 25-to-50-percent of their peaks. Most of northern Wisconsin is past its peak, but a few counties are at 100-percent this weekend. Mild temperatures in the 60s and 70s are predicted for most of the state during the weekend, with a slight cooloff into the 50s and 60s Sunday. The only chance of rain is Sunday in the Madison and Milwaukee regions.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state Department of Natural Resources’ board is set to consider creating dozens of miles of motor sport trails and roads within the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest.

The board is scheduled to vote on an amendment to the forest’s master plan on Wednesday. The amendment calls for developing up to 36 miles of off-road motorcycle trails in the forest, designating up to 205 miles of existing forest roads as ATV routes and developing tours for dual-sport motorcycles and four-wheel drive trucks on existing forest roads.

The amendment also calls for adding nearly 40 new campsites with water access, five miles of hiking trails, 50 miles of mountain biking trails and 60 miles of bicycle touring trails.

The 232,000-acre forest stretches across parts of Vilas, Oneida and Iron counties.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. home sales rose slightly last month as the Houston housing market quickly recovered from Hurricane Harvey. Still, a shortage of available homes is thwarting many would-be buyers and limiting sales.

The National Association of Realtors says existing home sales increased 0.7 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.39 million. That’s the first increase after three months of declines.

Sales have fallen 1.5 percent from a year ago, the first year-over-year decline since July 2016. That’s because so few homes are for sale, particularly at lower prices. Buyers have bid up prices: The median home price rose to $245,100, up 4.2 percent from a year ago. That’s faster than wage gains.

Sales in Houston rose 4 percent from a year ago after plunging 25 percent in August.
